At times, you may need a lawyer but not fully understand what type of case you have, civil or criminal. Civil cases are the types of cases in which citizens or companies sue each other in a court of law. These are the types of cases that are not involved with breaking the law. A criminal case is a lawsuit brought on by the State of California against a person who has broken a law. As opposed to in criminal cases, you wouldn’t have a right to a court-appointed lawyer in most civil cases.
The following are some of the different types of civil cases:
- Small claims cases – Lawsuits that are between individuals or companies that are for $10,000 or less and neither party is allowed to have a lawyer.
- Juvenile cases – Cases involving children under the age of 18 years old.
- Family law cases – Types of cases include divorce or even child support and custody
- General civil cases – It involves suing someone for money, which may be disputes over damage to property, someone getting hurt or even contract issues.
- Landlord and tenant cases – Types include a landlord who is trying to evict a tenant from a rental property.
- Probate cases – It is what is involved when it involves a person
being taking care of whether it is taking care of someone or even their personal affairs.
There are three different types of criminal cases:
- Infractions – The cases are usually minor violations and, usually, the punishment has to pay a fine. Traffic tickets are an infraction.
- Misdemeanors – These are more serious crimes which if convicted you can get up to 1-year in jail and/or fines of up to $1,000.
